Reading the Peripheries - A Participant's Report from the Congress of Young Europeans 2025

It has been more than four months since I took part in the workshop Reading the Peripheries as part of the Congress of Young Europeans 2025, hosted by the local office of the Heinrich Böll Stiftung in Tirana. Since then, time has passed for the experience to detach itself from the hectic pace of the congress and return as a sequence of scenes, encounters, observations, and moments of reflection that together continuously form an image of Kamza I had not expected beforehand.

A sketch of memories

A Four-Handed Visual Ethnography of an Albanian Village. A collaborative visual ethnography of a village in southwest Albania, Skicë Kujtimesh (A sketch of memories) is a short film that integrates the poetry of an artistic approach with the raw material of raw observation. Based on audiovisual documentation collected during a field expedition (one week, June 2024) to the coastal village of Lukova, this collaboration records personal and family stories told by women who were both actors and witnesses of the political, social and cultural changes in Southeast Europe during the second half of the 20th century.

Congress of Young Europeans, Tirana 2025

From 9–12 October 2025, Tirana hosted the 9th edition of the Congress of Young Europeans, bringing together young people from across the continent for four days of reflection, debate, and exchange. Under the theme “The Ends of Europe”, this year’s congress invited participants to think critically about Europe’s purpose, direction, and future transformation, both as a political project and as a lived, contested reality.
